A Quick One Off…

I was reading this article in The Escapist, and got to the end when Reidy is talking about various genres of plot based games. For some reason, the comment about Comedy got me thinking about the possibility of a game similar to a traditional French farce.

Now, farces are all about wacky crazy things going on with lots of people being confused. Cases of mistaken identity, people going in and out of doors at the most inopportune moments, slap stick humor and occasionally drunkenness and running through walls are all very common. The thing that makes a farce funny though, is that the audience is never really confused, but they get to watch the actors be completely mystified about pretty much everything going on around them.

I thought it might be interesting if you could make a game with a one room view, and all you can do is control characters as they enter the room / scene. You have no idea what they do when they leave the scene (save what you hear as they leave or come in), and basically the whole humor unfolds as you try to get the confusion straightened out

Granted, it’s not something that would promote a lot of agency, but still… might be fun.

A whole game based around the concept might get stale quickly, but if the farce concept was to be sprinkled liberally into a story-based game a lot of depth could be added. It would probably work best if the farce scene didn’t automatically happen, but was somehow triggered. Imagine how the right response or action would bring about a complete misunderstanding between characters, or by doing two quests at the same time would result in other quest characters becoming somehow becoming involved with each other. It would have an almost easter-egg feel to it, and would result in players experimenting with different responses or arranging “chance” meetings by indirectly controlling other characters. Similarly to how many people try to get every item in a game, they may try to activate every farce-like response in the game.
I feel that when a farce situation occurs, it is much funnier when it is unexpected.
