For the second question there are examples of it. If you remember the Pokemon games where you take the pictures of pokemon, Beyond Good and Evil had some elements with the camera and so did Dark Cloud II. But I knew this is not what you technically meant and these are small aspects.
I was actually thinking that the second idea would be great in first person games during conversations, if when you look away the character could ask you to look back at them or even tell that your unsatisfied with what they are telling you. You could be difficult which would affect your relationships with others and have negative affect on your game-play or build relationships with the npcs that will later help you.

Isn't it great when you hear other people spout your ideas back to you ;)

There are actually some great examples in games of the first challenge. Eternal Darkness is definately one, Silent Hill is another, and Ico also qualifies. They are very limited though, and you get "scary" or "majestic" far too often in both. I'm wondering if others are possible.

The second challenge, that's actually fundamental to one of my older theories. :D

The first challenge, I don't have any ideas off the top of my head, but I do have an example: Eternal Darkness for the GameCube.
