[...] If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll have noticed that I’ve been obsessed with Agency lately. On a 2 hour drive back from Charlottesville one day, I took all of these posts to their inevitable conclusion, and concluded a discussion that I’d had with Darius during VGXPO. During this conversation, I’d told Darius that a game is just rules. That’s its fundamental building block. I, however, used a misplaced quote from Pirates of the Caribbean, where Jack Sparrow talks about what a ship “really is.” I said that rules are what a game is. I was wrong. Just like a ship is made of wood, a game is make of rules. But what a ship is, what it really is, is freedom. What a game is, what it really is, and what makes it enjoyable, and the reason that we seek it out, is agency. [...]

[...] So, I’ve proposed the theory on this blog that addictiveness of games is directly related to the amount of perceived agency present in said game. There is, of course, much more that contributes to whether or not a game is addictive or not, but I am of the opinion that perceived agency is a major contributor. Since it’s currently the season for travel, my game selections have been limited, and I’ve found myself confined to games I can get on my phone and on my girlfriend’s new handheld system. I’ve also had a lot of down time, and thus I’ve been thinking about the agency theory in between sessions of solitaire and bubble breaker on my phone, and more recently between sessions of Elite Beat Agents on my (girlfriend’s) DS. I’ve found myself wondering if the theory still applies in games where perceived agency is so subtle that it exists at all (in the case of solitaire), where perceived agency is obvious but heavily related to random factors (in the case of bubble breaker) and where perceived agency is completely related to perceived skill level.
Darius: the thing is, if it's a good game and short, you're "wasting" your audience. Longer play = more dedicated audience. So, either you go episodic (for maximum profit) or you go high replay value (for maximum fan base). Doing neither is simply inefficient.

Jeff: You might be right... I'll have to think about what makes a game replayable. However, even if what makes it replayable is very different from what someone might expect, it is still something that makes the game replayable.

I'm saying that, whatever it happens to be, if you need your game to be replayable, use it! Whether it's permutations, or agency, or beautiful art - use it!

Clearly Darius is going to have to write somethign on replayability ;).

My only question to you, Craig, would be what makes a game replayable? There's no real new plot points that can occur in System Shock 2, for example, so the branching is not part of the replayability of the game. Some of my favorite games that I've played over and over again are adventure games, which not only have no new plot points, but no new challenges really (because I already know the answers to all the puzzles). But why do I replay them?

I personally think that for many of them the feeling of agency is what draws us to them, and we want that feeling again, even if we know exactly how our actions will affect the game, and even if the affects are the same every time.

We'll wait to see what Darius says though.

Craig: I think a short game, if priced well, doesn't necessarily need replay value. Especially if that short game is, say, episodic in nature.

About the "once through" thing: I disagree slightly.

I want to play a game for a certain number of hours based on how appealing the game is. Some games pull down two or three hours of play, others I'll gladly play for fifty or sixty.

If the game is ten hours long, then I may never finish it if it's a bad game. Or, if it's a good game, I may want to replay it five times. If it doesn't have that kind of replay value, I'll be very sad.

For example, I've played System Shock II literally a dozen times, and it's a moderately long game. But I've never managed to finish a Tom Clancy game, even though they're not exactly long games.

High quality or short (or both)? I suggest REPLAY VALUE.
