We're actually using LDAP internally for auth on subversion, wiki, and bug tracking. The problem is that I don't know enough about LDAP to use it affectively. Maybe I'll look into it for use in the future.

For the usernames problem, I've had a lot of success using LDAP - pretty much *everything* speaks it, so that you setup one LDAP auth system, and everything from the OS to the servers to your individual apps can now share an easy-to-programmatically-maintain distributed (i.e. all machines on the network) auth system.

Inserting and removing accounts before/after running unit tests is generally as easy as cat'ing them in and a reverse cat to take them out again.

Jeff, you beat me to the answer in your post. I seems to me that you are screaming for server virtualization with that configuration. Sounds pretty sick form where I'm sitting. Good luck. I look forward to reading how it goes.
